Tobias used to be a regular loner kid that was picked on and bullied at school. Before that night he coincidentally joined up with a small group of other kids on a shortcut through an abandoned construction site--or even way before Jake had decided to get some bullies to back off for him at least once--he was a troubled and lonely teen. He didn't really fit in anywhere with anyone.

His whole life had changed during the night an alien ship had to make an emergency landing in that construction site. Yes, indeed, since after having met an alien who had been fatally injured. The Andalite, War-Prince Eflangor, had come to warn them about the nasty and sneaky other aliens conspiring and plotting to enslave all of humanity on Earth; the Yeerks. Parasitic slugs that know how to take full control over sentient beings, including humans.

It was Tobias who was the most reluctant to have to leave Elfangor to his fate. Tobias was also the first to try out the new ability he and his new friends have acquired as a gift to fight against the Yeerks; the ability to change into any animal they could touch.

However, there was something important Elfangor had to say before the leader of the covert alien invasion had arrived. As powerful and useful it was to morph, it also had its risks. The big one was to never be in another animal form for more than 2 hours. After the two hours are up, whoever had morphed into a certain animal lifeform would be trapped and be unable to return back to original form.

This happened to Tobias, after a very difficult getaway from a gigantic underground lair the Yeerks have to feed their defenseless and blind parasitic bodies while their most unfortunate hosts were locked up in cages. On that first night, not long after an intense battle against their vicious and ruthless enemies, Tobias had stayed in red tailed hawk form for over 2 hours. For a time, he could only do so little to stick by his friends and help resist against the Yeerks... before a very powerful alien ally had helped Tobias regain the ability to morph again.
